On the death of Douglas H. Derring, Sr.

WHEREAS, Douglas H. Derring, Sr., of Norfolk, a retired member of the Norfolk Fire Department and a leading citizen of the Ocean View community, died on September 4, 2000; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Norfolk, Douglas Derring was a graduate of Maury High School and a veteran of service in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserve; and

WHEREAS, Douglas Derring retired following 35 years of meritorious service with the Norfolk Fire Department and was the owner of Doug's Hot Dogs in Ocean View, a popular lunchtime meeting place for the citizens of the North End of Norfolk; and

WHEREAS, Douglas Derring served as chairman of the Ocean View Coordinating Committee, as a member of the Heritage Bank and Trust Ocean View Advisory Board, and as a member of the board of directors for the Ocean View Merchants Association; and

WHEREAS, Douglas Derring was a former two-term president of the Ocean View Lions Club, a member of the Bayview and Ocean View Civic Leagues, and a member of the Mayor's Ocean View Task Force; and

WHEREAS, in 1998, Douglas Derring was appointed to the Norfolk City Planning Commission, on which he served until his death; and

WHEREAS, Douglas Derring leaves a lasting and valuable legacy of dedicated and effective service to his community, the Commonwealth, and the nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of an exemplary citizen of Norfolk, Douglas H. Derring, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Douglas H. Derring, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his lifetime of service to the Ocean View community.
