2001 SESSION
013805416WHEREAS, the University of Virginia Hospital and the University of Virginia School of Nursing are celebrating their centennial anniversaries in 2001 with a rededication to their history of compassionate and essential health care delivery to the citizens of the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, the University of Virginia Hospital's Central Pavilion, a brick building that remains today as a part of Hospital West, was built in 1901 at a cost of $50,000, including $17,000 in state funding, and accommodated 25 patients; and
WHEREAS, the University of Virginia School of Nursing, a two-year program that initially enrolled four students, was founded in association with the University of Virginia Hospital in 1901 in order to develop and maintain a nursing staff to care for patients and their families; and
WHEREAS, the University of Virginia Hospital has evolved into a nationally recognized facility that has been named as one of the top 100 hospitals in the United States; and
WHEREAS, with an average daily census of 450 patients, the University of Virginia Hospital treats 29,000 admitted patients and 600,000 outpatients with a distinguished staff consisting of a full-time faculty of 564,630 residents and fellows, approximately 1,295 nurses, and 4,400 other highly trained professional and nonprofessional staff; and
WHEREAS, the University of Virginia School of Nursing has grown into a fully accredited National League for Nursing Education institution with nearly 500 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral nursing degree candidates; and
WHEREAS, the University of Virginia Hospital and the University of Virginia School of Nursing, with their faculty, staff, students, alumni, volunteers, and administrators, have contributed positively to the health care profession and improved the quality of life and health for countless individuals through excellence in care and excellence in education; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the University of Virginia Hospital and the University of Virginia School of Nursing on the occasion of their 100th anniversaries; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to John T. Casteen III, president of the University of Virginia, and John P. Ackerly III, rector of the University of Virginia, in honor of this milestone anniversary in the history of the University of Virginia Hospital and the University of Virginia School of Nursing.
