SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 495
On the death of United States Marine Corps Staff Sergeant William Bryan Nelson.

WHEREAS, William Bryan Nelson, a crew member on the Marine Corps' MV-22 Osprey, died in the line of duty on April 8, 2000; and

WHEREAS, a native of Virginia, William Bryan Nelson graduated from Varina High School, where he played football and baseball, and earned a bachelor of science degree in aviation management from Southern Illinois University; and

WHEREAS, William Bryan Nelson served in the United States Marine Corps since 1989 and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant, Instructor and Crew Chief, Helicopter Mechanic; and

WHEREAS, William Bryan Nelson participated in Operations Provide Comfort and Encourage Hope in Eastern Turkey and Northern Iraq in 1991, Operations Provide Promise, Deny Flight and Sharp Guard during the Bosnian Crisis in 1993, and Operation Support Democracy and Uphold Democracy in Haiti in 1994; and

WHEREAS, William Bryan Nelson served as a Flight Line Mechanic Instructor at the Fleet Replacement Enlisted Schools Training from 1995 to 1999; and

WHEREAS, William Bryan Nelson was named Instructor of the Year in 1998 at the New River Air Station; and

WHEREAS, William Bryan Nelson received a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with One Gold Star in August, 1998; and

WHEREAS, William Bryan Nelson was specially selected to serve with the first MV-22 Osprey training squadron based upon his experience, motivation, and skills as an instructor; and

WHEREAS, William Bryan Nelson, through his short but distinguished career, served the Commonwealth and the nation with courage, integrity, and dedication; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby mourn the loss of a distinguished Virginian, United States Marine Corps Staff Sergeant William Bryan Nelson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of United States Marine Corps Staff Sergeant William Bryan Nelson as an expression of the respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
