SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 486
Commending Alan Webb.

WHEREAS, Alan Webb, a senior at South Lakes High School in Reston, set a new high school indoor track and field record by running the mile in three minutes, 59.86 seconds at the New Balance Games held in New York City on January 20, 2001; and

WHEREAS, Alan Webb is the first high school student in more than 33 years to break the four-minute mile in a track and field competition; and

WHEREAS, Alan Webb participated in the New Balance Games' event as the sole high school student competing against a field of more experienced runners; and

WHEREAS, Alan Webb is one of only four high school age runners to ever run a sub-four-minute mile; and

WHEREAS, Alan Webb has a proven record of excellence in track and field competition, including three Virginia Group AAA cross-country and eight All-Met titles, a record shattering 4:06.94 mile run in the 1999 Foot Locker Outdoor Championships held in Raleigh, North Carolina, and a first place 4:03.33 mile run in the 2000 Herbster Track Classic held in Charlotte, North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Alan Webb has been recruited and accepted as an undergraduate student athlete by the University of Michigan beginning in the fall; and

WHEREAS, by virtue of his exceptional skills and commitment to the pursuit of athletic excellence, Alan Webb is a role model for other students and the citizens of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Alan Webb on his unprecedented accomplishments in local, state and national track and field competitions; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Alan Webb as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and best wishes as he completes his senior year at South Lakes High School.
