WHEREAS, electronic government puts government directly into the hands of the public; and
WHEREAS, electronic government is a high priority for the Commonwealth because it provides a means for citizens, business, educational institutions, and government to work effectively and efficiently together; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles has more daily contact with citizens than any other state agency; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles has developed a Cyber Customer Service Center that enables customers to transact business from their personal computers instead of travelling to a Department of Motor Vehicles facility; and
WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles was the first government agency in the world to offer license renewals over the Internet and allows customers to perform most major transactions online; and
WHEREAS, during the past two years, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles has received state, national and international recognition for its electronic government initiatives by winning Governor Gilmore's Agency Technology Award for 1999, MIT's and Andersen Consulting's e-Citizen Service Award and e-Government Pioneer Award for 2000, the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrator's 2000 Customer Service Excellence Award, Government Technology's "Best of the Web" Award, E-Government Solutions' 2000 Pioneer Award, and Civic.com's State and Local 50 Award; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commends the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and all involved persons for their efforts in furthering Virginia's role as a leader in electronic government; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and support for the Department's efforts and dedication.
