017950500WHEREAS, nine highway intersections along Virginia Route 7 and Virginia Route 28 in Loudoun County -- Virginia Route 28 and Church Road, Virginia Route 28 and Old Ox Road, Virginia Route 28 and Sterling Boulevard, Virginia Route 7 and Countryside Boulevard, Virginia Route 7 and Potomac View Road, Virginia Route 7 and Sterling Boulevard, Virginia Route 7 and Ashburn Road, Virginia Route 7 and Belmont Road, and Virginia Route 7 and Ashburn Village Road -- are among the most dangerous intersections in the County; and
WHEREAS, these nine intersections combined accounted for 468 accidents in 1999 alone -- 130 more than in 1998; and
WHEREAS, police spokesmen attribute high and rapidly increasing traffic volumes for the high accident rates at these intersections; and
WHEREAS, it is highly desirable that every effort be made to improve traffic safety and reduce the accident rate at these intersections; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That a special panel be requested to work together to improve traffic safety at the most dangerous highway intersections in Loudoun County. The special panel shall consist of one or more representatives of the Virginia Department of Transportation, selected by the Northern Virginia District Administrator of the Virginia Department of Transportation; a representative of the Commonwealth Transportation Board who lives in Loudoun County; the Chairman and those members of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors within whose districts the above-mentioned intersections lie; a representative of the Loudoun County staff responsible for transportation safety, selected by the County Administrator; a representative of the Department of State Police, selected by the Superintendent of State Police; the Sheriff of Loudoun County; and interested citizens and elected officials of Loudoun County; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the Secretary of Transportation, the Northern Virginia District Administrator of the Virginia Department of Transportation, the County Administrator of Loudoun County, the Chairman of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, the Superintendent of State Police, and the Sheriff of Loudoun County.
