SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 349
Commending Malverse A. Nicholson.

WHEREAS, Malverse A. Nicholson, a highly respected administrator at Norfolk State University, retired on June 30, 2000; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Morgan State University in Baltimore and South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, Malverse Nicholson came to Norfolk State University in 1979 as assistant vice president for development; and

WHEREAS, from 1984 until his retirement, Malverse Nicholson served as assistant to the president for legislative affairs and was the university’s chief legislative liaison in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Malverse Nicholson was instrumental in the growth and development of Norfolk State University, which has seen a doubling of its budget, an increase in its academic offerings, and growth in its physical plant during his tenure; and

WHEREAS, Malverse Nicholson exercised his duties and responsibilities with the General Assembly, the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia, and the city councils of Hampton Roads with great dignity, integrity, and professionalism; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his duties as assistant to the president, Malverse Nicholson served as executive director of the Athletics Foundation of Norfolk State University for more than 20 years, building a solid donor base for the athletic program and leaving the foundation in sound financial condition; and

WHEREAS, Malverse Nicholson also represented Norfolk State University on numerous boards and commissions, including the Virginia Business Higher Education Council Advisory Group and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education; and

WHEREAS, for more than two decades, Norfolk State University has been the beneficiary of the diligence, dedication, and professional leadership of Malverse Nicholson; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Malverse A. Nicholson on the completion of an outstanding career of service to Norfolk State University; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Malverse A. Nicholson as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration, gratitude, and best wishes.
