On the death of William Bland “Billy” Dew, Jr.

WHEREAS, William Bland "Billy" Dew, Jr., of Middleburg, a noted architect responsible for the restoration of the Red Fox Inn and the design of other noted Middleburg buildings, died on November 13, 2000; and

WHEREAS, Billy Dew attended the University of Virginia, from which he graduated with a degree in architecture in 1930, and spent three years abroad studying the architecture of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries in Europe, an experience that influenced his later architectural style; and

WHEREAS, Billy Dew arrived in Middleburg in 1939, when he was commissioned to restore the historic Red Fox Inn, and never left, except for service in naval intelligence during World War II; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his prized restoration of the Red Fox Inn, Billy Dew designed the Middleburg Community Center, built in 1949, and the Middleburg National Bank, which was completed in 1959; and

WHEREAS, Billy Dew also designed commercial buildings in Leesburg and Hamilton and designed or remodeled a number of significant homes in Virginia and the District of Columbia; and

WHEREAS, Billy Dew headed the effort to restore the Red Fox Inn while retaining its 18th century atmosphere, and his use of the finest local craftsman, combined with his own skill in adapting historic structures without sacrificing their original beauty, led to a successful remodeling; and

WHEREAS, Billy Dew was licensed to practice in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia and was a member of numerous professional associations, including the American Institute of Architects and the Virginia Association of Professions; and

WHEREAS, widely known for his gentlemanly demeanor and highly respected for his professional accomplishments, Billy Dew will be sorely missed by his many friends, colleagues, and admirers in the Middleburg community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of an influential architect and leading citizen of Middleburg, William Bland “Billy” Dew, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William Bland “Billy” Dew, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
