2001 SESSION
WHEREAS, Mary Jennings, a resident of Reston and a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, has achieved national recognition for exemplary volunteer service by receiving a 2001 Prudential Spirit of Community Award; and
WHEREAS, this prestigious award, presented by the Prudential Insurance Company of America, in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities; and
WHEREAS, as one of two state honorees, Mary Jennings will receive $1,000, a silver medallion, and a trip to Washington, D.C., for national recognition from Prudential; and
WHEREAS, Mary Jennings was cited for creating a campaign to educate elementary school students about pollution in the Chesapeake Bay watershed; and
WHEREAS, when Mary Jennings learned that people often dumped hazardous material in storm drains without realizing the toxic effects on the environment, she increased community awareness by educating area children; developed a presentation that included brochures, mascots, posters and scripts; trained three friends to assist in the effort; and presented the program at town fairs, Scout meetings and local classrooms; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Commonwealth, the strength of Virginia’s communities, and the overall vitality of American society depend--in great measure--on the dedication of young people like Mary Jennings, who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Mary Jennings be commended on her recognition as one of America’s finest young volunteers; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mary Jennings as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration and gratitude for her outstanding dedication to community service and her ongoing commitment to helping her fellow citizens.
