Commending Robert Martin Screen.

WHEREAS, Robert Martin Screen, professor and chairman of the Department of Communicative Science and Disorders at Hampton University, was one of the recipients of the 2001 Outstanding Faculty Awards; and

WHEREAS, the Outstanding Faculty Awards, sponsored by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, are considered the highest awards granted to faculty members at Virginia's public and private colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, Robert Martin Screen, who earned his bachelor’s degree from Hampton Institute, his master’s degree from New York University, and his doctorate from Michigan State University, has taught at Hampton University since 1954; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Screen founded the first degree-granting program in speech and language pathology at an historically black institution, and under his leadership, Hampton University has trained more African-American speech-language pathologists than any other college in the country; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Screen serves as the men's and women's tennis coach at Hampton University and is a widely published author of novels, scholarly books and articles; and

WHEREAS, the Outstanding Faculty Award is a fitting recognition of Dr. Screen's many and ongoing contributions to Hampton University, to the profession of speech and language pathology, and to higher education in the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Robert Martin Screen be commended on being named one of Virginia's outstanding faculty members; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Robert Martin Screen as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration and gratitude for his brilliant efforts on behalf of the young people of Virginia.
