WHEREAS, Susan Louis Elmore Williams, Enrolling Clerk of the Virginia House of Delegates, completed 31 years of service on December 31, 2000; and

WHEREAS, a native of Richmond, Susan Williams graduated from St. Gertrude High School; and

WHEREAS, Susan Williams joined the House Clerk's staff in the Enrolling Room in 1970, assisting in the Copy Room, proofreading on the mezzanine in the Old House Chamber, aiding the Committee Clerks during session, and helping Journal/Records with proofreading and indexing; and

WHEREAS, Susan Williams became Engrossing Clerk in 1972, Assistant Enrolling Clerk in 1973, and Enrolling Clerk in 1978; and

WHEREAS, Susan Williams served under House Clerks George R. Rich, Joseph H. Holleman, Jr., and Bruce F. Jamerson; and under Speakers John Warren Cooke, A. L. Philpott, Thomas W. Moss, Jr., and S. Vance Wilkins, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, Susan Williams was a member of the American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries; and

WHEREAS, in addition to her work proofreading, engrossing, and enrolling the bills passed during each of her 31 sessions with the General Assembly, Susan Williams oversaw the preparation of the Acts of Assembly for yearly publication; and

WHEREAS, Susan Williams will be greatly missed by her coworkers and associates in the legislative branch agencies for her calm demeanor, meticulous attention to detail, thorough knowledge of the lawmaking process, gracious and tactful manner, and willingness to work unstintingly to achieve the greatest possible accuracy; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Susan Louis Elmore Williams be commended for her many years of dedicated service to the General Assembly of Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Susan Louis Elmore Williams as an expression of the House of Delegates’ gratitude and best wishes for a long, happy and well-deserved retirement.
