WHEREAS, Aubrey D. Tarkington retired as Senior Manager of External Affairs for Virginia Power on July 1, 2000, thus ending a 35-year career with the company; and

WHEREAS, Aubrey Tarkington was born on Virginia’s Eastern Shore and raised in Chesapeake; and

WHEREAS, Aubrey Tarkington graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1962 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and, upon graduation, was commissioned in the United State Air Force, leaving the service as a 1st Lieutenant after three years; and

WHEREAS, Aubrey Tarkington was hired in 1965 by Virginia Electric and Power Company and worked for seven years in Richmond, two years in Waynesboro, and four years in Alexandria before transferring back to Richmond in 1978, where he and his wife, Rosie, raised two sons and helped nurture their athletic abilities; and

WHEREAS, Aubrey Tarkington co-founded the Chesterfield Youth Soccer, Pocoshock Valley Youth Soccer, and Richmond Metropolitan Youth Soccer programs and served on the board of directors of Virginia Youth Soccer; and

WHEREAS, in 1989, Aubrey Tarkington was transferred to Fairfax, where he worked in Virginia Power’s External Affairs Department and became exceptionally active in community affairs, rendering invaluable service to a wide range of community-service organizations; and

WHEREAS, Aubrey Tarkington served as president of Celebrate Fairfax for three years, for which he was commended by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and was chairman of the board of Leadership Fairfax in 1999; and

WHEREAS, Aubrey Tarkington has served on the board of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce, where he was active in the Legislative Affairs and Valor Awards committees; and

WHEREAS, Aubrey Tarkington has served on the boards of directors of the Arts Council of Fairfax County, Claude Moore Colonial Farm, the Northern Virginia Community Foundation, Northern Virginia Mediation Service, the Women’s Center of Northern Virginia, and the Northern Virginia Community College Foundation; and

WHEREAS, Aubrey Tarkington has provided fund-raising expertise to Wolf Trap, Loudoun Hospital, and the INOVA hospital system; and

WHEREAS, a member of the Arlington Rotary Club, Aubrey Tarkington served as co-chair of the "Give Your Heart to a Child" Gala in 1999; and

WHEREAS, Aubrey Tarkington has been cited repeatedly for his exemplary community service, receiving a Citation of Merit for Citizen Service from the Washington Post and the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations in 1996 and earning a Certificate of Appreciation from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for professional service to the citizens of Fairfax County in 2000; and

WHEREAS, Aubrey Tarkington has provided invaluable information and assistance to members of the General Assembly for many years; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Aubrey D. Tarkington on the completion of an outstanding career with Virginia Power and for his numerous contributions to Fairfax County, Northern Virginia, and the Richmond area; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Aubrey D. Tarkington as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation and best wishes.
