Commending the Oakton High School baseball team.

WHEREAS, the Oakton High School baseball team won the 2000 Virginia High School League Group AAA state baseball championship; and

WHEREAS, in an exciting final game, the Oakton Cougars defeated Patrick Henry High School by scoring the game's only run in the bottom of the seventh inning; and

WHEREAS, for the fifth time in postseason competition, the Oakton team won in its final at-bat, earning the affectionate nickname of "Cardiac Cougars"; and

WHEREAS, on their way to the state title, the Oakton Cougars won their second consecutive Concorde District championship and their first Northern Region title since 1982; and

WHEREAS, after easily defeating Albemarle High School, 12-1, in the state semifinals, Oakton won the final game with a combination of outstanding pitching, tight defense, and timely hitting; and

WHEREAS, the 2000 state Group AAA baseball championship was the first in Oakton High School history; and

WHEREAS, Oakton's historic victory was a tribute to the talent, perseverance, and teamwork of the players, the leadership of Head Coach Scott Rowland and his staff, and the constant support of the parents and fans, who endured and celebrated the many comebacks of the "Cardiac Cougars"; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Oakton High School Cougars on their state baseball championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Scott Rowland in honor of the championship season of the 2000 Oakton High School Cougars.
