Commending the James Madison University marching band.

WHEREAS, the James Madison University marching band has been widely acclaimed as one of the finest collegiate bands in the nation; and

WHEREAS, the band, more than 400 strong and known as the Marching Royal Dukes, has been cited repeatedly for excellence, bringing positive attention to the band, James Madison University, and the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the James Madison University marching band has been awarded the Sudler Trophy, emblematic of being the finest marching band in the nation; and

WHEREAS, the Marching Royal Dukes have proudly carried the name of their university and their Commonwealth abroad in appearances commemorating the 700th anniversary of the founding of Monaco and welcoming the new millennium in Athens and Nauplia, the current and ancient capitals of Greece; and

WHEREAS, for the second time, the James Madison University marching band has been honored by its selection to participate in the Presidential Inaugural Parade, which occurred on January 20, 2001, in honor of the inauguration of President George W. Bush; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the James Madison University marching band on its continued outstanding performance; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to J. Patrick Rooney, band director, and Linwood H. Rose, president of James Madison University, in honor of the sustained excellence of the Marching Royal Dukes of James Madison University.
