2001 SESSION
WHEREAS, James R. F. Woods of the city of Fairfax, a decorated veteran of World War II and a valued advisor to many Northern Virginia political leaders, died on November 20, 2000; and
WHEREAS, a native of Pecos, Texas, Jim Woods was attending the University of California at Berkeley when Pearl Harbor was attacked; and
WHEREAS, Jim Woods enlisted in the United States Army; served with the 320th Infantry, 35th Division; was wounded in action and was part of the second wave at Normandy; and was decorated for valor with the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart; and
WHEREAS, a longtime employee of the federal government, Jim Woods worked with the Department of the Army and the Post Office Department (now the United States Postal Service); and
WHEREAS, at the time of his death, Jim Woods was president of the corporate board of the American Legion in Fairfax and an active member of many community-service organizations; and
WHEREAS, Jim Woods was a former chairman of the Fairfax City Planning Commission, served on the Electoral Board, and was active with high school and Little League athletics; and
WHEREAS, an ardent supporter of Republican political candidates, including his wife, former Virginia Senator Jane Woods, Jim Woods was well-known and widely respected for his political acumen, fierce loyalty and unshakeable determination; and
WHEREAS, Jim Woods leaves a matchless legacy of service to friends and family, his community, the Commonwealth and the nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a uniquely valuable Virginian, James R. F. Woods; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James R. F. Woods as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
