017720724WHEREAS, in the March 18, 2000, issue of Newsweek magazine, a feature article focused on the nation's best high schools; and
WHEREAS, Menchville High School in Newport News was included in the magazine's listing of the finest high schools in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the Newsweek rankings were based on high schools' advanced placement and International Baccalaureate programs, and the index used by Newsweek measures a school's effort to encourage its students to excel; and
WHEREAS, nationwide, approximately 13,000 high schools administer advanced placement and International Baccalaureate tests; and
WHEREAS, in 1998 Menchville High School was ranked by the College Board in the top 100 nationally for secondary schools administering the greatest number of advanced placement exams, and the number of exams administered at Menchville High School increased from 396 in 1996 to 716 in 1999; and
WHEREAS, earning honors from a respected national magazine is welcome recognition for Menchville High School and a further indication of the excellence of the Newport News public schools; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly congratulate Menchville High School on its high ranking among the nation's best high schools; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Principal Robert Johnson as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation and admiration for the achievements of Menchville High School.
