Requesting the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation to identify preferred locations for passenger rail stations along the Interstate Route 66 corridor, potential sources of revenues to support construction of such stations, and necessary legislative and other actions needed to begin the accumulation of financial and other resources required for the construction of those stations.

WHEREAS, Interstate Route 66 not only serves as a major east-west highway transportation component, but also as a very important focus of economic activity; and

WHEREAS, the fact that the Interstate Route 66 corridor is not only a travel artery, but also a travel destination in its own right, makes identification of its needs and potential, together with sources of necessary funding to meet those needs and develop that potential, doubly important; and

WHEREAS, the great need for and considerable benefit to be derived from the extension of passenger rail service into and along the Interstate Route 66 corridor have been well established by numerous studies; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, in cooperation with the Counties of Fairfax and Prince William, be requested to identify (i) preferred locations for passenger rail stations along the Interstate Route 66 corridor, (ii) potential sources of revenues to support construction of such stations, and (iii) necessary legislative and other actions needed to begin the accumulation of financial and other resources required for the construction of those stations.

All agencies of the Commonwealth and affected local governments shall provide assistance to the Departments for this study, upon request.

The Departments shall complete their work in time to submit their findings and recommendations to the Governor and the 2001 Session of the General Assembly as provided in the procedures of the Division of Legislative Automated Systems for the processing of legislative documents.
