WHEREAS, Sam Houston came from a lineage of Scots who had settled in the Great Valley of Virginia in the early 1700s and his father, also named Sam Houston, was a member of Morgan’s Rifle Brigade during the Revolutionary War; and

WHEREAS, Sam Houston was born on March 2, 1793 near Lexington, Virginia and lived there until his father’s death; and

WHEREAS, during his life, Virginia’s son, Sam Houston, held many positions of honor and respect, including governor of Tennessee, general in the Texas Army, president of the Republic of Texas, and U.S. Senator; and

WHEREAS, in 1930, the Legislature voted to fill the alcoves of the Rotunda with Virginia-born Presidents who succeeded Washington; and

WHEREAS, Virginia-born Sam Houston brought dignity and acclaim to himself and the Commonwealth through his lifetime achievements; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, that the Governor be requested to direct that a bust of Sam Houston be made and displayed in the Capitol Rotunda among other notable Virginia sons.
