2001 SESSION
015945820WHEREAS, on September 27, 2000, three men went on a spur-of-the-moment fishing trip to Elkhorn Lake in the George Washington National Forest in Augusta County; and
WHEREAS, their small fishing boat overturned, dumping the men into the cold waters of the lake; and
WHEREAS, Shawn Mooney and Jeff Turner, passing by, were apprised of the situation, and together with William Stables, took immediate action, stopping their truck and running to the site of the accident; and
WHEREAS, Shawn Mooney and Jeff Turner plunged into the frigid lake and successfully rescued two of the fisherman, both of whom eventually recovered following medical treatment; and
WHEREAS, the tragic accident at Elkhorn Lake claimed the life of one man and might well have claimed the lives of two more if not for the prompt and courageous actions of Shawn Mooney, Jeff Turner, and William Stables; and
WHEREAS, Shawn Mooney, Jeff Turner, and William Stables were honored as heroes by the Augusta County Board of Supervisors and by Augusta County Sheriff Randall Fisher; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Shawn Mooney, Jeff Turner, and William Stables for their willingness to risk their own lives to save the lives of others; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to Shawn Mooney, Jeff Turner, and William Stables as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for their selfless heroism.
