2001 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Woodbridge High School girls’ soccer team, a perennial contender in state soccer championships, took the final step by winning the 2000 Virginia High School League Group AAA state soccer title; and
WHEREAS, led by seniors and four-year starters Kelly Melton and Anny Weaver, the Woodbridge Vikings defeated Lake Braddock High School, 5-0, in the state semifinal game; and
WHEREAS, in the state championship contest, the Vikings faced formidable opposition from West Springfield High School, the defending state champions and five-time state title winners in the 1990s; and
WHEREAS, rebounding from a 3-2 halftime deficit, the Woodbridge Vikings, behind three goals by Liana Wooten, rallied for a 5-3 victory and their first state championship since 1988; and
WHEREAS, Coach Mike Yeatts’ Vikings also earned the distinction of becoming the first non-Northern District school to win the Group AAA state title since the 1988 Woodbridge team; and
WHEREAS, the Woodbridge High School girls’ soccer team’s state title capped a perfect season in which it finished with a record of 21-0 and outscored its opposition by a margin of 99-9; and
WHEREAS, for years one of the strongest programs in Virginia, the 2000 Woodbridge Vikings captured a long-awaited and richly deserved state soccer championship; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Woodbridge High School girls’ soccer team on its state championship performance; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Mike Yeatts as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations to the Woodbridge High School Vikings.
