18.2-76.3 Informed Written Consent.
A. Due to the serious adverse events associated with its use, before prescribing sildenafil, also known as Viagra, as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, a physician shall obtain the informed written consent of the patient.
B. At least twenty-four hours in advance of issuing the prescription, the physician shall by telephone or in person, inform the patient of all potential risks associated with the use of sildenafil, including a full, reasonable and comprehensible medical explanation of the nature, benefits and dangers of its use, as well as alternatives, including abstinence.
C. Any physician who fails to comply with the provisions of this section shall be subject to a $2,500 civil penalty.
