SUMMARY AS PASSED:

Advanced mathematics and technology diploma. Directs the Board of Education, in the exercise of its authority to recognize exemplary academic performance by providing for diploma seals, to establish by July 1, 2000, criteria for awarding a diploma seal for advanced mathematics and technology for the standard and advanced studies diplomas. The Board shall consider including criteria for (i) technology courses; (ii) technical writing, reading, and oral communication skills; (iii) technology-related practical arts training; and (iv) industry, professional, and trade association national certifications.

SUMMARY AS PASSED SENATE:

Advanced mathematics and technology diploma. Directs the Board of Education to establish the requirements for a third diploma option, i.e., an advanced mathematics and technology diploma. The advanced mathematics and technology diploma will be a 24-credit diploma, with nine required verified credits (course and Standards of Learning test satisfactorily completed), as follows: four credits in English, two of which shall be verified credits and one of which shall be in technical writing/reading/communication skills; three credits in mathematics, three of which shall be verified credits; three credits in laboratory science, one of which shall be a verified credit; three credits in history/social studies, one of which shall be a verified credit; two credits in health and physical education; two credits in fine or practical arts, one of which shall be in a technology-related course, such as graphic design; two elective credits; and five credits in technology courses, two of which shall be verified credits, based on national industry, professional or trade certifications. This bill also includes several nonsubstantive technical amendments to reorganize various requirements for diplomas in one place and to refer correctly to "licensure" of instructional personnel rather than to "certification." The provisions of this act will not become effective unless an appropriation effectuating the purposes of this act is included in the 2000 appropriation act, passed during the 2000 Session of the General Assembly, and signed into law by the Governor.
