SUMMARY AS PASSED: (all summaries)

One minute of silence. Revises the current law authorizing school boards to establish moments of silence for meditation, prayer or other silent activity to require daily observation of a one-minute moment of silence in every classroom in the public schools in Virginia. The current requirement that the teacher responsible for each classroom must take care that all pupils remain seated and silent and make no distracting display during this time is retained. The student may, in the exercise of his or her individual choice, meditate, pray, or reflect or engage in any other silent activity that does not interfere with, distract, or impede other pupils in the like exercise of individual choice. The Office of the Attorney General is authorized to intervene and must provide legal counsel for defense of this provision.
