SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:

Study; postpartum depression, its effects and prevention. Requests the Department of Health to establish an interagency task force to study postpartum depression. This resolution describes the feeling of many women following child birth and the fact that this condition can result in a severe condition called depressive psychosis in which new mothers may experience rapid changes in mood, lose of interest in the baby, suicidal thoughts, and thoughts of harming the baby. The task force is to be composed of local health department representatives, the Chief Medical Examiner, representatives of law-enforcement, judges, the Board of Medicine, Board of Nursing, obstetricians and gynecologists, pediatricians, and others as the Commissioner deems appropriate. The task force will consider the etiology of postpartum depression, develop a profile of women suffering from this condition, determine the prevalence of the problem in Virginia and the extent to which information concerning the condition is available to women of child-bearing age, and recommend ways to treat postpartum depression, heighten the public's awareness of this condition, and sensitize physicians and other health care providers to the seriousness of this illness. The Department of Health and the task force will report in 2001.
