SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 87
Commending the South Lakes High School theatre arts program.

WHEREAS, Reston’s South Lakes High School and its Theatre Arts Department have been recognized repeatedly in the artistic community for the excellence and creativity of their programs; and

WHEREAS, the South Lakes High School theatre students have earned grand prize honors in the George Mason University Original One-Act Play Festival and the Catherine Filene Shouse Wolf Trap Competition; and

WHEREAS, seven South Lakes High School theatre arts students have been chosen for the select Governor’s School for the Arts Program; and

WHEREAS, the South Lakes theatre arts program has reached new heights, selected by the American High School Theatre Festival board to participate in the prestigious Edinburgh Theatre Festival in Scotland in August 2000; and

WHEREAS, the South Lakes program was one of only 14 programs selected nationwide to participate in the Edinburgh festival; and

WHEREAS, the South Lakes students will perform “The Phantom,” based on Gaston Leroux’s “Phantom of the Opera,” before a discerning international audience in Edinburgh and will be able to choose from among 15,000 performances to attend during the festival; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Theatre Arts Department director Maria Harris, the South Lakes High School theatre arts students have earned a unique opportunity to experience one of the largest and most prestigious of international theatre festivals; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend the South Lakes High School theatre arts program for its outstanding achievements; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Maria Harris, director of the South Lakes High School theatre arts program, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and best wishes for a successful and rewarding trip to Scotland.
