WHEREAS, Nettie Beverly Clark of Norfolk, a devoted member of the First Baptist Church, Bute Street, and a woman noted for her varied artistic abilities, died on October 8, 1999, at the age of 99; and

WHEREAS, a native of Tunis, North Carolina, Nettie Beverly Clark was educated in a one-room schoolhouse near her father’s farm, then graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Virginia State Teacher’s College in Petersburg (now Virginia State University), Nettie Beverly Clark earned a master’s degree in art education from Columbia University in New York; and

WHEREAS, a dressmaker, tailor, and caterer, Nettie Beverly Clark was known for her artistic ability and is fondly remembered for making the first band uniforms, by hand, for Elizabeth City State Teacher’s College in North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Nettie Beverly Clark was a devout woman who was active in Baptist Churches in North Carolina, Washington, D.C., New York, and Norfolk, where she was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church, Bute Street, for many years; and

WHEREAS, a popular and respected citizen and a leader in her church, Nettie Beverly Clark will be sorely missed by her large and loving family, by the parishioners of the First Baptist Church, Bute Street, and by her countless friends in the Norfolk community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine citizen of Norfolk, Nettie Beverly Clark; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Nettie Beverly Clark as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
