2000 SESSION
WHEREAS, Bernice Beatrice Jaudon Miller of Norfolk, a former member of the faculty at Norfolk State University, died on June 14, 1999; and
WHEREAS, Bernice Miller began her education at the age of four in Savannah, Georgia, graduated from secondary school at the age of 16, and matriculated at Morris Brown College in Atlanta; and
WHEREAS, encouraged by her professor and advisor at Morris Brown College, Bernice Miller pursued post-graduate education, earning a master’s degree from Temple University; and
WHEREAS, Bernice Miller returned to Atlanta to teach English at Morris Brown College, helped two of her siblings attend college, and met and married Clarence Conrad Miller, Sr.; and
WHEREAS, during their 48 years of marriage, the Millers’ teaching careers took them to Shorter College in Little Rock, Arkansas, Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana, and finally Norfolk State University; and
WHEREAS, constantly in quest of further education despite professional and family duties, Bernice Miller never gave up her dream of earning her doctorate, beginning her quest in the 1960s and, after delays for health and professional reasons, earning her doctor of philosophy degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1981; and
WHEREAS, not even a debilitating illness in 1991 could slow down Dr. Bernice Miller, as she maintained her alertness and sense of humor to the end, earning her the affection and respect of all who were fortunate enough to cross her path; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of an inspiring teacher and fine citizen of Norfolk, Dr. Bernice Beatrice Jaudon Miller; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Bernice Beatrice Jaudon Miller as an expression of the General Assembly’s great respect for her memory.
