SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 295
On the death of Harold Quayle.

WHEREAS, Harold Quayle of Suffolk, a longtime lumberman and leader in the Suffolk community, died on March 2, 2000, at the age of 93; and

WHEREAS, a native of Liverpool, England, Harold Quayle began his career in the lumber business in the 1920s in Bolton, North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Harold Quayle served as an air raid warden in Suffolk during World War II; and

WHEREAS, Harold Quayle was co-owner of the Williamston Lumber Company for 10 years, was employed by Camp Manufacturing, and retired from the William Henry Sheffield Lumber Company following 20 years of service; and

WHEREAS, a former chairman of the Community Concerts of Suffolk, Harold Quayle was also the former chairman of the board of Oxford United Methodist Church, where he taught the men’s Bible class; and

WHEREAS, Harold Quayle was the head of a large and loving family, including his wife of 70 years, Bernyce MacDonald Quayle, and his son, Senator Frederick Quayle of Chesapeake; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a fine Virginian, Harold Quayle; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Harold Quayle as an expression of the esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
