WHEREAS, Dr. Mary Mays Featherston, a leader of the Church of God in Christ at the local, state, and national levels, died on January 26, 2000; and

WHEREAS, a native Virginian, Mary Featherston was educated in the Norfolk public schools and became a member of the C. H. Mason Memorial Church of God in Christ as a teenager; and

WHEREAS, Mary Featherston earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education from Hampton University, her master’s degree in curriculum and teaching from Columbia University, and her L.H.D. in humanities from Trinity Hall College; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong member of the C. H. Mason Memorial Church of God in Christ, Dr. Featherston served the church in a variety of leadership roles, including president of the Purity Class, the Young Women’s Christian Council, and the Mothers Board; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Featherston was the district president of the Young Women’s Christian Council and served as district missionary of the Norfolk District for many years; and

WHEREAS, on the state level, Dr. Featherston served as chairperson of the Program Committee, president of the State Young Women’s Christian Council, president of the Board of Education, and assistant state supervisor and state supervisor; and

WHEREAS, at the time of her death, Dr. Featherston was state supervisor emeritus of the Department of Women, Second Jurisdiction, State of Virginia, Church of God in Christ, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, nationally, Dr. Featherston was chairperson of Area 1A, a member of the board of directors of the Lillian Brooks Coffey Home, and a member of the executive board of the International Women’s Department of the Church of God in Christ; and

WHEREAS, a woman of great achievement, compassion, and integrity, Dr. Mary Mays Featherston will be sorely missed by her large and loving family, by the parishioners of the C. H. Mason Memorial Church of God in Christ, and by the thousands of members of the Church of God in Christ whom she served with such devotion, commitment, and affection; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a distinguished Virginian, Dr. Mary Mays Featherston; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Dr. Mary Mays Featherston as an expression of the great esteem in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
