WHEREAS, Lula Cofield’s daughter, Arnette Streat, has been traveling to Jamaica for several years as a missionary to help lead the Vacation Bible School; and

WHEREAS, when her daughter told her that many children in Jamaica were without shoes, Lula Cofield, a resident of Chesapeake, decided to take action; and

WHEREAS, working through her church, the Second Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk, Lula Cofield issued an appeal for new or slightly used shoes to be sent to the barefoot children of Jamaica; and

WHEREAS, due to Lula Cofield’s energetic efforts, 275 pairs of shoes were donated, which left her with the problem of how to ship the shoes to Jamaica; and

WHEREAS, Caribbean Shipping, based in Virginia Beach, volunteered to help, packing the shoes in large shipping containers and transporting them to Jamaica at cost; and

WHEREAS, Lula Cofield, who plans to make the shoe drive an annual event, is also heading a fund-raising effort for school supplies for the young people of Jamaica, who are the beneficiaries of her caring nature and her commitment to those less fortunate than herself; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Lula Cofield for her charitable work on behalf of the schoolchildren of Jamaica; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lula Cofield as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her selflessness, generosity, and dedication.
