WHEREAS, the Piedmont Regional Criminal Justice Training Academy was created to provide mandated and specialized criminal justice training for the counties of Henry, Patrick and Pittsylvania; the cities of Danville and Martinsville; and the towns of Chatham and Gretna; and

WHEREAS, the Piedmont Regional Criminal Justice Training Academy was also created to decrease the expenses to local agencies that were associated with the cost of mileage, lodging and meals for travel to distant training sites; and

WHEREAS, 611 criminal justice personnel have received the mandated and specialized training at the Piedmont Regional Criminal Justice Training Academy in the most cost-effective manner; and

WHEREAS, if the Piedmont Regional Criminal Justice Training Academy were to close, the criminal justice agencies that receive their training at the Academy would incur increased travel expenses to obtain training; and

WHEREAS, the counties of Henry, Patrick and Pittsylvania; the cities of Danville and Martinsville; and the Towns of Chatham and Gretna would incur a total estimated cost increase in excess of one million dollars; and

WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Martinsville passed a resolution supporting the continuation of the Piedmont Regional Criminal Justice Training Academy; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That it is the sense of the General Assembly that the Piedmont Regional Criminal Justice Training Academy should continue as it is currently structured; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a copy of this resolution to the Secretary of Public Safety and the Council of the City of Martinsville so that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly in this matter.
