SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 195
Designating the Virginia Quilt Museum as the official quilt museum of the Commonwealth.

WHEREAS, the Virginia Quilt Museum was organized in 1991, incorporated in 1992, and opened as a public museum on August 25, 1995; and

WHEREAS, following many hours of hard work by volunteers from across the state, the historic Warren-Sipe House in Harrisonburg was renovated and refurbished to serve as the home of the Virginia Quilt Museum; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the Virginia Quilt Museum is to collect, preserve, document, and interpret quilts and related artifacts for the benefit of the public; and

WHEREAS, to further this mission, the museum serves as a repository for quilts of historic, aesthetic, and technical significance; educates the public about the history and significance of quilting; serves as a resource center for the study of quilts; encourages the continued documentation and conservation of quilts; and encourages the continued practice of quilting by teaching technical skills and providing examples of excellence; and

WHEREAS, in its short history as a museum, the Virginia Quilt Museum has attracted attention and significant numbers of visitors on both the national and international levels; and

WHEREAS, many publications, including those of the American Automobile Association and the Smithsonian Institution, Veranda magazine, Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, and the Washington Post have commented favorably on the Virginia Quilt Museum; and

WHEREAS, since its opening, the Virginia Quilt Museum has attracted over 18,000 visitors from all 50 states and 21 foreign countries, as far away as Mongolia; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Quilt Museum has participated or has plans to participate in many functions, including Historic Garden Week, First Night Harrisonburg, the National Education Association’s Read Across America program, cooperative exhibits with other museums in the state and the Harrisonburg-Staunton area, and international quilt exhibits in cooperation with Luxembourg, Russia, Japan, and Great Britain; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Quilt Museum, which serves Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region, is one of only six quilt museums in the nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the Virginia Quilt Museum be hereby designated the Official Quilt Museum of the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for the presentation to the Director and Curator of the Virginia Quilt Museum in recognition for its designation as the Official Quilt Museum of the Commonwealth.
