WHEREAS, the Council for Exceptional Children is a professional organization that promotes the advancement and education of all exceptional children; and

WHEREAS, the Council for Exceptional Children is dedicated to enhancing public awareness, community involvement, and proper training as effective ways of enabling exceptional children to reach their full potential; and

WHEREAS, exceptional children include those with superior intellectual abilities, rare creative talents, or physical, mental, or emotional disabilities; and

WHEREAS, educators have developed instructional and educational material and programs designed to enable exceptional children and youth to develop the academic, social, and vocational skills necessary to cope with the modern world; and

WHEREAS, it is essential that every child in Virginia has the opportunity to receive an education, regardless of the individual challenges he or she may face; and

WHEREAS, the Council for Exceptional Children is one of the leading organizations dedicated to ensuring that all exceptional children are given the opportunity to learn, develop, and succeed; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate the week of February 14-18, 2000, as Exceptional Children’s Week in Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly urge the citizens of the Commonwealth to recognize and support the outstanding efforts of the Council for Exceptional Children and other dedicated organizations and individuals to bring the benefits of education to exceptional children throughout Virginia.
