WHEREAS, Hogshire Industries, a Norfolk-based concern that has evolved into one of the premier awning manufacturers on the East Coast, was founded 100 years ago by Edward Lee Hogshire; and

WHEREAS, through a century of change and challenge, Hogshire Industries, now headed by Edward Lee Hogshire’s grandson, Russell B. “Happy” Hogshire, continues to prosper; and

WHEREAS, Hogshire Industries began making canvas rigging for Chesapeake Bay work boats, then, with the decline of the work boats, the company began manufacturing marine hatch and industrial covers and large tents for religious revivals; and

WHEREAS, under three generations of Hogshires, Hogshire Industries has shown the flexibility and resilience to change with the times and to meet the needs of its customers; and

WHEREAS, Hogshire Industries is now devoted almost exclusively to the manufacture of awnings, and its products have been used in everything from NASA space flight to the decorative finishes at country clubs and Norfolk’s Waterside; and

WHEREAS, as the company celebrates its centennial, Hogshire Industries can look back with pride on a century of innovation, growth, and prosperity; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Hogshire Industries on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Russell B. “Happy” Hogshire as an expression of the congratulations and best wishes of the General Assembly.
