004769560WHEREAS, vehicles using limited access highway entrance and exit ramps are often required to execute sharp and sometime long-duration turning maneuvers; and
WHEREAS, regardless of the degree of bank built into such entrance and exit ramps, it may not be possible for all vehicles, regardless of their size or weight, to execute the requisite turning maneuvers safely at the same speed; and
WHEREAS, tight turns at high speed present a particular safety hazard to large trucks with heavy loads, especially liquids and other loads prone to shifting; and
WHEREAS, it is highly desirable that operators of large vehicles with heavy loads be made aware of possible tilt-over dangers by posting, where appropriate, reduced speed limits for trucks on highway entrance and exit ramps; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the Virginia
Department of Transportation be requested to study posting of reduced truck
speed in certain highway entrance and exit ramps. Technical assistance shall be
provided to the Department of Transportation by the [ Department's Highway
Virginia Transportation ] Research Council.
All agencies of the Commonwealth shall provide assistance to the Department for this study, upon request.
The Department shall complete its work in time to submit its findings and recommendations to the Governor and the 2001 Session of the General Assembly as provided in the procedures of the Division of Legislative Automated Systems for the processing of legislative documents.
