WHEREAS, during his 13-year tenure as head football coach at Virginia Tech, Frank Beamer has experienced unprecedented success, capped by the Hokies’ brilliant 1999 season; and
WHEREAS, a 1969 graduate of Virginia Tech, where he was a three-year starter as a defensive back, Frank Beamer returned to his alma mater in 1987 and set about building the program that was to become a model of consistency in the 1990s; and
WHEREAS, the first Virginia Tech alumnus to lead the Hokies’ football program since the 1940s, Frank Beamer has built the Tech football team into a consistent winner that has appeared in a post-season bowl game for seven consecutive seasons; and
WHEREAS, with an overall record at Virginia Tech of 88-59-2, Frank Beamer has coached and won more games than any other football coach in Virginia Tech history; and
WHEREAS, in 1997, Frank Beamer was inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame, the first active coach at the university to be so honored; and
WHEREAS, in 1999, Frank Beamer guided the Hokies to dizzying heights—an undefeated season, a Big East Conference championship, a number two national ranking by both the Associated Press and the Bowl Championship Series polls, and a date with Florida State to play for the national championship in January 2000; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his unparalleled accomplishments, Frank Beamer was named 1999 National Coach of the Year by the Associated Press; and
WHEREAS, Frank Beamer has also earned Coach of the Year titles from the Big East Conference and the Walter Camp Football Foundation; and
WHEREAS, Frank Beamer was selected by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association as the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year following the Sugar Bowl Game; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his amazing success with the 1999 Hokies, Frank Beamer has succeeded in creating at Virginia Tech a level of stability and consistent success that has been achieved at only a handful of universities nationwide; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Frank Beamer for his outstanding performance as head football coach at Virginia Tech; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Frank Beamer as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his sterling achievements and best wishes for continued success.
