Commending the Salem High School football team.

WHEREAS, for the second consecutive year, and the third year in the past four years, the Salem High School football team won the Virginia High School League Group AA, Division 4 state football championship; and

WHEREAS, in a thrilling battle with the Patriots of Park View High School of Sterling, Virginia, the Salem Spartans came back from an early two-touchdown deficit to win, 21 - 20; and

WHEREAS, with an unblemished 1999 record of 14 - 0, the Salem Spartans will enter the 2000 football season with an active winning streak of 28 games, the longest in Virginia; and

WHEREAS, in the state title game, the Park View Patriots scored two quick touchdowns and appeared able to score at will against the Spartans’ defense, but a long pass play that led to a touchdown put the Spartans back in the game; and

WHEREAS, with a newly inspired defense and a strong and diversified attack, the Spartans scored in the second, third, and fourth quarters, then turned back a last ditch effort by the Patriots to win the title; and

WHEREAS, the inspired coaching of Head Coach Willis White and his staff, combined with the talent, desire, and teamwork of the athletes, has produced a football dynasty at Salem High School that has produced yet another state championship for the City of Salem; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Spartans of Salem High School on their second consecutive perfect season; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Willis White as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the stellar performance of the Salem High School football team.
