006463684WHEREAS, the Elite Roanoke Valley Jaguars basketball team, together for four years under the leadership of Coach Ronald L. Turner, has experienced extraordinary success at the regional, state, and national levels; and
WHEREAS, representing eight schools in the Roanoke Valley, the Jaguars ended the 1999 season with a sparkling record of 41 - 11; and
WHEREAS, in addition to playing in all parts of the Commonwealth, the Roanoke Valley Jaguars have traveled to North Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio, Maryland, Missouri, Illinois, and Florida to play in regional and national tournaments; and
WHEREAS, lacking a corporate sponsor, the Jaguars rely on fund-raising events, concession stand revenues, and the generous contributions of local individuals and businesses to cover their considerable travel expenses; and
WHEREAS, the Elite Roanoke Valley Jaguars placed first in the Youth Basketball of America regionals, and, in the national tournament played in Orlando, Florida, placed 14th in the nation; and
WHEREAS, in the Commonwealth Games of Virginia, the Jaguars were silver medalists in 1997 and 1999 and gold medalists in 1998; and
WHEREAS, the Jaguars captured second place in the AAU regionals and won the Queen City Classic, played in Charlotte, North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, in the State Games of America, held in St. Louis, Missouri, the Elite Roanoke Valley Jaguars, representing Roanoke and the Commonwealth, were gold medal winners and national champions; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Elite Roanoke Valley Jaguars on their sustained excellence in state, regional, and national competition; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Coach Ronald L. Turner as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations on the Elite Roanoke Valley Jaguars’ national basketball championship.
