Commending Lanier Frantz.

WHEREAS, Lanier Frantz, an executive at Salem-based Graham-White Manufacturing, placed more than 1,100 acres of his 1,400 acre property in Craig County in an easement in 1990; and

WHEREAS, Lanier Frantz's land, which abuts the Jefferson National Forest, is one of the largest easements in the region and protects the Craig Creek Watershed; and

WHEREAS, not only has Lanier Frantz made excellent wildlife habitat improvements on his Craig County property, but he has also opened the property to numerous training sessions and groups, making his farm a training center for best management practices; and

WHEREAS, Lanier Frantz's farm was the first Virginia farm west of the Blue Ridge Mountains to embrace the DMAP program, a Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and property owners' cooperative program designed to manage deer for quality wildlife; and

WHEREAS, by leasing portions of his farm to groups interested in open space and hunting, Lanier Frantz has demonstrated that there are ways for landowners to gain a financial return on their land without selling it to developers, thus preserving the open space for future generations; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Lanier Frantz for demonstrating that private property and conservation are compatible, and for developing his farm as a model for like-minded property owners; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lanier Frantz as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation of Lanier Frantz's respect for Virginia's natural resources.
