007172672WHEREAS, Tomeka Campbell, a third-grade teacher at Danville’s Park Avenue Elementary School, was the recipient of a $25,000 award for teaching excellence from the Milken Family Foundation; and
WHEREAS, established in Los Angeles in 1987, the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards recognize educators who “instill confidence and inspire students through innovative instruction and show a commitment to enhancing the profession”; and
WHEREAS, a teacher at Park Avenue Elementary School for six years, Tomeka Campbell is one of only eight teachers in Virginia, and 172 nationwide, chosen for this unique honor; and
WHEREAS, reflecting Virginia’s desire to recognize teaching excellence in light of more rigorous standardized testing, the Commonwealth participated in the Milken awards program for the first time in 1999; and
WHEREAS, Tomeka Campbell, a graduate of Radford University, is well known in the Danville public schools for her unique abilities in motivating and inspiring young minds, her meticulous preparation, and her flexibility in adapting her lessons to the needs and abilities of her students; and
WHEREAS, Tomeka Campbell’s well-earned national award brings honor and recognition to herself, to Park Avenue Elementary School, to the Danville public schools, and to the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Tomeka Campbell on being recognized as one of the finest teachers in the nation; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Tomeka Campbell as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for her outstanding efforts on behalf of the young people of Danville.
