Commending the Texas Tavern on the occasion of its 70th anniversary.

WHEREAS, February 13, 2000, marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of a Roanoke gastronomic institution, the legendary Texas Tavern; and

WHEREAS, opened in 1930 by I. N. “Nick” Bullington, the Texas Tavern has changed little over the years, to the delight of its loyal customers, and is still run by the Bullington family; and

WHEREAS, offering the finest in Southwest Virginia cuisine, which includes chili, hamburgers, hot dogs, and “Cheesy Westerns,” the Texas Tavern, serving 1,000 people, 10 at a time, is a fixture in downtown Roanoke; and

WHEREAS, often referred to as “Roanoke’s Melting Pot,” the Texas Tavern appeals to young and old; rich and poor; blue collar, white collar, and no collar; lunch-hour regulars and midnight snackers; and

WHEREAS, serving thousands of bowls of chili in an atmosphere that varies between hectic and chaotic, the owners of the Texas Tavern have never felt the need to tamper with a winning formula; and

WHEREAS, the loyalty of its customers, the lines that frequently snake around the block, and the patrons at 4:00 a.m. all attest to the enduring popularity of a Roanoke institution, the Texas Tavern; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Texas Tavern on the occasion of its 70th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Texas Tavern in honor of its 70 years of noble service to the appetites of several generations of Roanoke’s citizens.
