WHEREAS, founded in 1910, the National Urban League, a nonprofit, community-based organization, is the premier social service and civil rights organization in America; and
WHEREAS, in 1990, the National Urban League’s 114th affiliate, the Northern Virginia Urban League, was created; and
WHEREAS, the Northern Virginia Urban League is committed to addressing the social and economic problems of Northern Virginia’s minority, youth, elderly, and poor communities and to promoting equal opportunity and equal rights through direct services and effective advocacy; and
WHEREAS, throughout its 10-year history, the Northern Virginia Urban League has assisted African-Americans in the achievement of social and economic equality through a variety of programs; and
WHEREAS, the senior in-community service program, funded by the U.S. Department of Labor through the National Urban League, offers low-income persons 55 years of age and older part-time training opportunities; and
WHEREAS, the Service to Alexandria project is a joint venture of the Northern Virginia Urban League, the City of Alexandria, and the Alexandria Redevelopment Housing Authority to provide housing rehabilitation and maintenance to low-income, elderly, and disabled community residents; and
WHEREAS, through these and other similar programs, the Northern Virginia Urban League plays a vital role in assisting Northern Virginia’s communities in providing vital services to their residents; and
WHEREAS, on March 31, 2000, the Northern Virginia Urban League celebrates 10 years of “Serving Tomorrow’s Leaders”; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Northern Virginia Urban League for its effective advocacy and direct assistance to the Commonwealth’s minority and disadvantaged citizens; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to George H. Lambert, Jr., chief executive officer, as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of the invaluable and ongoing work of the Northern Virginia Urban League.
