On the death of James R. Sipe, Sr.

WHEREAS, James R. Sipe, Sr., a prominent and successful Harrisonburg attorney and community leader, died on February 25, 2000; and

WHEREAS, a native and lifelong resident of Harrisonburg, James Sipe graduated from Harrisonburg High School, where he was a football star, and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond; and

WHEREAS, after military service during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1954, James Sipe earned his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1958 and, in 1960, won election as Harrisonburg-Rockingham County Commonwealth’s Attorney; and

WHEREAS, following eight years of distinguished service as Commonwealth’s Attorney, James Sipe worked with his partners to build one of the area’s largest and most influential law firms; and

WHEREAS, James Sipe served his profession as president of the Harrisonburg Bar Association and as a member of the Virginia Bar Association and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association; and

WHEREAS, a past president of Greater Madison, James Sipe was also past president and trustee of the Rockingham Public Library, past president of the Virginia Student Aid Foundation, and past junior and senior warden of Emmanuel Episcopal Church; and

WHEREAS, James Sipe served as substitute judge of the Rockingham District Court and was active in a wide variety of civic, fraternal, and charitable organizations; and

WHEREAS, widely respected, completely professional, and personally popular, James Sipe leaves an enviable legacy of service to his community, his profession, the Commonwealth, and the nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with sadness the loss of a distinguished Virginian, James R. Sipe, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James R. Sipe, Sr., as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
