2000 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Fairfax County Park Authority was created on December 6, 1950, and 15 acres of land were donated in the Annandale area on May 2, 1951, for the county’s first park; and
WHEREAS, as the Fairfax County Park Authority prepares to celebrate its golden anniversary, it manages 350 parks comprising more than 18,000 acres for the enjoyment of the residents of the county; and
WHEREAS, the Fairfax County Park Authority was originally established to save open space, preserve historic sites, provide facilities for children and adults to play and relax, and designate areas where wildlife could continue to thrive; and
WHEREAS, the Fairfax County Park Authority remains true to its mission today, and its success is evident in the park system’s ranking among the best in the country; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of Fairfax County today enjoy islands of woodlands and playing fields, strips of stream valleys and trails, historic fragments of old Fairfax, and centers for active recreation and leisure pursuits; and
WHEREAS, in celebration of its milestone anniversary, the Fairfax County Park Authority plans special programs and stewardship activities throughout the year 2000 to enable the county’s residents to enjoy their uniquely valuable public facilities and to remind the citizens of Fairfax of the need to preserve and protect the county’s resources; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Fairfax County Park Authority on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Frank de la Fe, chairman of the Fairfax County Park Authority, as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for the authority’s half-century of exceptional work on behalf of the citizens of Fairfax County.
