WHEREAS, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh will be honored as the second recipient of the Pearl S. Buck Award at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg; and

WHEREAS, the Pearl S. Buck Award recognizes women whose lives and achievements reflect Pearl S. Buck’s commitment to human dignity and understanding and honors Randolph-Macon Woman’s College’s most famous alumna, the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature and a tireless champion of human rights; and

WHEREAS, Sheikh Hasina has been instrumental in the peaceful overthrow of autocratic rule in Bangladesh, a movement that culminated in her election as Prime Minister in 1996; and

WHEREAS, Sheikh Hasina’s efforts have enriched the lives of women, children, and the poor in her native country; and

WHEREAS, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina embodies the humanitarian values promoted by Pearl S. Buck; and

WHEREAS, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will receive the second Pearl S. Buck Award at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg on April 8, 2000; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate April 8, 2000, as Sheikh Hasina Day in Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Honourable Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, in recognition of her honorable and successful efforts to improve the lives of the citizens of Bangladesh.
