006560652WHEREAS, Pearl S. Buck, an internationally known author and humanitarian, graduated in 1914 from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg; and
WHEREAS, Pearl S. Buck was the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature and received the Pulitzer Prize for her novel, The Good Earth; and
WHEREAS, Pearl S. Buck was the founder of the Pearl S. Buck Foundation, a worldwide organization that champions the cause of disadvantaged children, and the Welcome House, an international adoption agency that specializes in placing displaced and marginalized children; and
WHEREAS, these two organizations have consistently displayed strong support for families and communities around the globe; and
WHEREAS, the second annual Pearl S. Buck Award will be awarded at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in April 2000 to the Honourable Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh, a woman whose life exemplifies the humanitarian ideals of Pearl S. Buck; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby designate the month of April as Pearl S. Buck Month in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly urge all Virginians to honor the memory of Pearl S. Buck by recognizing the manifold accomplishments of the humanitarian organizations she founded and supported.
