2000 SESSION
WHEREAS, the 1998 - 1999 Princess Anne High School Cavaliers enjoyed unprecedented success, capturing the school’s first state basketball championship; and
WHEREAS, the Cavaliers from Virginia Beach showed their first flashes of brilliance by defeating the Frank W. Cox High School Falcons for the first time early in the season; and
WHEREAS, the Cavaliers soon charged to a number-one ranking in the Beach District, then defeated Ocean Lakes High School, 49 – 45, to win Princess Anne’s first district championship in nearly 20 years; and
WHEREAS, in a difficult Eastern Regional tournament, the Princess Ann Cavaliers defeated strong teams from Norview, Hampton, and Maury High Schools to win their first-ever regional championship; and
WHEREAS, in the Virginia High School League Group AAA state championship tournament, Princess Anne, led by Beach District Player-of-the-Year Daryl Towe, advanced to the final four with a convincing 66 – 44 victory over the Cougars of Courtland High School; and
WHEREAS, a much closer 74 – 66 victory over Robert E. Lee High School of Springfield advanced the Cavaliers to the final game, which they won in breathtaking fashion, 71 – 68 over South Lakes High School to capture the first state basketball championship in Princess Anne High School history; and
WHEREAS, the hard work, determination, and discipline of the Cavalier players, combined with the expertise of Beach District Coach-of-the-Year Gary Cason and his staff, led to a well-earned state championship for the Princess Anne High School Cavaliers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Princess Anne High School boys’ basketball team on its outstanding 1998 - 1999 season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Gary Cason in honor of the championship performance of the Princess Anne High School Cavaliers.
