Commending Al Milley.

WHEREAS, Al Milley, for 37 years the sports editor at the Danville Bee and the Danville Register & Bee, has announced his intention to retire in the spring of 2000; and

WHEREAS, a former professional baseball player, Al Milley settled in Danville in 1958, when he joined the Danville Parks and Recreation Department; and

WHEREAS, five years later, Al Milley became the Danville Bee’s one-man sports department, covering all aspects of local sports; and

WHEREAS, over the past 37 years, the Danville Bee, which became the Danville Register & Bee in 1989, has grown as the city has grown, but the one constant has been Al Milley, covering and promoting local sports; and

WHEREAS, Al Milley’s emphasis throughout his career has been youth sports, and he has never lost sight of what was most important to his readers and the community, complete coverage of local sports, especially school sports; and

WHEREAS, the founder of the Danville Register & Bee Sports Hall of Fame, Al Milley was inducted as a member of the Hall in honor of his lifetime of service to Danville; and

WHEREAS, Al Milley was honored at the 17th annual Danville Register & Bee Holiday Shootout, a high school basketball tournament that now awards its winning team the Al Milley Danville Register & Bee Holiday Shootout Trophy; and

WHEREAS, Al Milley’s long and honorable career is drawing to a close, but his many readers in the Danville area may take comfort from his plans to write free-lance articles and contribute a regular column on his favorite topic, local sports; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Al Milley on the completion of an outstanding journalistic career in Danville; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Al Milley as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his dedication to youth sports in the Danville area.
