2000 SESSION
WHEREAS, Terry A. Zahn, a prominent broadcast journalist in Hampton Roads and a longtime television news anchorman, died on January 25, 2000; and
WHEREAS, a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Terry Zahn earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and later received a master of arts degree in communications from the University of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, from 1969 to 1971 Terry Zahn served as an officer in the United States Navy, was stationed in Norfolk, and made two deployments to the Mediterranean aboard the carrier USS John F. Kennedy; and
WHEREAS, following his service in the Navy, Terry Zahn worked at television stations in Wisconsin, Hawaii, Florida, Iowa, and Illinois before returning to Hampton Roads in 1981 as a reporter for WAVY-TV in Portsmouth; and
WHEREAS, elevated to weeknight coanchor in 1984, Terry Zahn became one of Hampton Roads’ most successful and popular television journalists; and
WHEREAS, Terry Zahn moved to WVEC-TV in 1994 as coanchor and continued his award-winning journalistic career; and
WHEREAS, Terry Zahn won numerous awards from the Associated Press, United Press International, and the Virginia Association of Broadcasters, and in 1984 was named, together with one other reporter, as a recipient of the Radio TV News Directors Association International Award for his coverage of the sinking of the coal ship Marine Electric; and
WHEREAS, diagnosed with cancer in 1997, Terry Zahn went public with his condition, earning the respect of thousands of residents of Hampton Roads who were encouraged and inspired by his courageous battle with the disease; and
WHEREAS, when his cancer went into remission after six months of treatment, Terry Zahn returned to the air, and his relentless optimistic and positive attitude in the midst of a fight for his life was an inspiration to his friends, his colleagues, and thousands of television viewers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the untimely passing of an accomplished and courageous Virginian, Terry A. Zahn; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Terry A. Zahn as an expression of the great respect in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
