HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 37
On the death of Eula W. Radcliffe.

WHEREAS, Eula W. Radcliffe, a longtime political counselor and community activist in James City County, died on November 30, 1999; and

WHEREAS, a native of Prince George County, Eula Radcliffe attended Bruton Heights School after she moved to the Williamsburg area with her family; and

WHEREAS, a persuasive and influential political force in James City County, Eula Radcliffe was particularly active in the Grove community in the southern part of the county, where she encouraged voter participation and won the respect of the community’s residents; and

WHEREAS, a valued counselor to many political leaders on the local and state level, Eula Radcliffe was sought out by those considering a political career in James City County; and she counseled local politicians and candidates for statewide office, including Senator Charles Robb and former Governor L. Douglas Wilder; and

WHEREAS, Eula Radcliffe’s longstanding commitment to her community took the form of many roles in community service from the Boy Scouts of America to the Little Zion Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, Eula Radcliffe held leadership positions in the Williamsburg-James City-York branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) of which she was a life member, the Grove Recreation Association, the Williamsburg-James City County Community Action Agency, and the James City County Electoral Board; and

WHEREAS, Eula Radcliffe donated her time and talents to the American Cancer Society, the League of Women Voters, the Williamsburg-James City County Public School Affirmative Action Committee, and the James City County Anti-Litter and Beautification Committee; and

WHEREAS, a respected and influential voice in her community, a friend and valued counselor to most of James City County’s political leaders, and a dedicated and accomplished community servant, Eula Radcliffe leaves a lasting and enviable legacy of service to James City County and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of a distinguished Virginian, Eula W. Radcliffe; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Eula W. Radcliffe as an expression of the General Assembly’s great respect for her memory.
